Zimbabwe's hunting season runs from April to October, covering the dry winter months when game is most concentrated and hunting conditions are at their best. Each period within the season offers different advantages depending on your target species.
April to May: Early Season
The early season follows the end of the rains. Vegetation is still green and lush, rivers and pans are full, and the bush is at its most beautiful. Temperatures are moderate and comfortable for hunting. This is an excellent time for leopard baiting, as fresh tracks are easier to identify in damp ground. Buffalo herds are large and concentrated, and the cooler temperatures make long tracking days more comfortable. Lion hunting can begin with baiting operations. Plains game is in excellent condition after the rains.
June to August: Peak Season
The heart of the hunting season. The bush dries out progressively, concentrating game around remaining water sources. Visibility improves as leaves drop from deciduous trees. This is the best all-round period for every species. Leopard baiting is productive as natural food becomes scarcer and cats are more willing to commit to baits. Buffalo and elephant are easier to locate around water. Lion become more active as territories shift. Temperatures are cool at night and comfortable during the day, making this the most pleasant time to be in the bush.
September to October: Late Season
The hottest and driest period. Animals are concentrated at the last remaining water points, making finding game easier but the physical demands of hunting greater. This is prime time for elephant in the Zambezi Valley, where big bulls congregate along the river. Buffalo are found in smaller groups around permanent water. Leopard and lion are active but the heat can limit mid-day hunting. Temperatures in the low-lying valleys can exceed 40 degrees Celsius. Fitness matters during the late season.
Species-Specific Recommendations
Leopard: May to September. The optimal window for baiting and blind hunting.
Lion: May to September. Prime period for both baiting and tracking.
Buffalo: April to October. Huntable throughout the season.
Elephant: September to October. Late season concentrates bulls at water.
Plains Game: April to October. Excellent throughout the season.
