How to Choose a Professional Hunter in Africa

By Brian Van Blerk | June 2026

Your choice of professional hunter will determine the quality, safety, and success of your African safari more than any other factor. Here is how to make the right decision.

1. Experience and Track Record

The single most important factor is experience. How many years has the PH been hunting professionally? How many safaris has he conducted? What is his record with your target species? A PH with decades of experience has encountered every possible scenario in the bush and knows how to handle it. Ask specific questions: how many leopards has he taken? How many buffalo? What is his success rate?

2. Licensing and Associations

Ensure your PH holds a valid professional hunter's licence for the country you will be hunting in. In Zimbabwe, this is issued by the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority. In Tanzania, by the Tanzania Wildlife Authority. Membership of professional associations such as ZPHGA, TAHOA, or the Dallas Safari Club indicates a commitment to industry standards.

3. Client References

A good PH will readily provide references from past clients. Speak to at least two or three previous clients and ask about the hunting itself, the camp, the safety, and the overall experience. Look for consistency in the feedback. If every client mentions the same strengths, that tells you something real.

4. Hunting Ethics

Fair chase hunting, conducted on foot in free-range conditions, is the standard you should expect. Ask about the hunting method: is it walk-and-stalk? Over bait? Is the area fenced or free-range? A PH who hunts behind fences or uses unethical shortcuts is not someone you want to trust with a dangerous game encounter.

5. Team Quality

A PH is only as good as his team. Skilled trackers, experienced camp staff, and reliable logistics make the difference between a smooth safari and a frustrating one. Ask about the trackers: how long have they worked together? What is their background?

6. Communication

The way a PH communicates before the safari tells you a lot about how he will communicate during it. Does he respond promptly and thoroughly to your questions? Does he provide detailed quotations with clear breakdowns? Does he ask about your experience level, fitness, and expectations? A PH who takes the time to understand you before the safari will take the time to deliver for you during it.

7. Safety Record

Dangerous game hunting carries real risk. Ask about the PH's safety record. Has anyone been injured on his watch? How does he handle wounded dangerous game? What is his backup protocol? The best PHs have an unblemished safety record because they take no shortcuts and make no compromises with safety procedures.
